NFL: The All-22 Football Footage the League Won't Show You

If you ask the league to see the footage that was taken from on high to show the entire field and what all 22 players did on every play, the response will be emphatic. “NO ONE gets that,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote in an email. This footage, added fellow league spokesman Greg Aiello, “is regarded at this point as proprietary NFL coaching information.”

I’ve often thought that football is a sport that lots and lots of people watch without understanding it. People like to complain about a coach calling a bad play without really knowing what would have been a good play, and why. The “All 22” shot isn’t as exciting as what we get on TV, though. And Friday Night Lights of course heightened the drama even more (when it showed football) by giving us on the field shots of players’ faces that are impossible to capture in real games. (via)
