Dark Horse iPad App Recommendations

Dark Horse Comics will launch its iPad app next week on April 27. iFanboy has a list of its initial titles. My recommendations:

  • Fray: a sequel of sorts to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, set a couple hundred years in the future featuring the slayer of that time.
  • Serenity: Shepherd’s Tale: find out the backstory of Shepherd Book, a character the show never got time to do much with.
  • Sugarshock: manic fun by Joss Whedon and Fabio Moon.
  • Umbrella Academy (FCBD 14pp), Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite, and Umbrella Academy: Dallas: written by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance (but don’t that stop you, if it would). Great fun series. Drawn by Gabriel B&eacute, who’s the twin brother of Fabio Moon (see Sugarshock.

Also there’s all sorts of Hellboy which I really should read at some point.

I haven’t tried the actual app, of course. I’m hopeful that it’s done well, ideally at least better than DC and Marvel’s comiXology-driven ones. I still sort of think it’s problematic to squeeze comics onto the iPad’s smaller screen and would love to see some comics drawn for just that size.
